The actions you take when you are starting your blog will either help your blog make money or they will not. You do not want to waste your precious blogging hours doing tasks that are not going to help your bottom line. I will cover five things that will help your blog get off to a great start and move you quickly down the path towards profitability. You should be spending almost 100% of your efforts in these areas for at least your first 90 days of blogging. Here is what you need to focus on:
1. Get your blog up on a WordPress platform — You can really help your blog make money by putting it up on the correct platform. You do not want to start your blog on a free platform. You have no control over the future of this type of blog. The blog can be taken down any time for any reason. You do not want to have months of work go up in flames if something happens to your free blog. Do not use free blogging platforms. You have been warned.
2. Get high quality posts up on your site — This is the main work you need to get done quickly to get your blog started. You will want to keep posting on a regular basis until you have at least ten quality posts on your blog. You want to make sure these posts are about 500 words in length, and they need to be your best content. Take the time to write these posts very well as they will be part the “first impression” you make on your readers.
3. Write articles to generate back links to your site — This is where a lot of new bloggers fall short in getting their blogs “on the map”. You are going to have to get some back links to your posts. This will let the search engines know you are there. The more back links you get to your home and post pages, the more quickly you will be indexed by the search engines. You need to get five back links to each of your first post. This will take you a good while, but will really help your site.
4. Find opportunities to guest post to get back links — If you can find blogs in your niche that will allow you to guest post, this is a great way to get unique back links to your blog. You just need to submit a post in your niche and make sure you have a link to your home pages and another link to one of your interior post pages. Use your best keywords as anchor text, and you will be good to go. These type of back links can really help your rankings, and you start to make some contacts in your niche.
5. Develop a “pre-sell” process for your top recommended product — If you are going to sell products from your blog, you are going to have to get good at “pre-selling” them with your posts. You want to let your readers know how the product can help them and why you are recommending it. It is not sufficient to just “put a banner up and hope” in today’s marketplace. You need to let your readers know why the product is something they should take a look at and why they might want to buy it.
